The founders of B1 Sexshops are the two brothers Martin and Harrie van Bree. They started as greengrocers and grew into successful sex entrepreneurs. From the vegetable garden and various weekly markets, they transitioned to a better business they found in a mail order company. This was at a time when the pill was still common, and hygienic rubber goods were only available at the chemist or specialty shops in the capital. The alternative in that not-too-distant past was either abstaining or yet another family expansion. In this period before the sexual revolution, Harrie and Martin started building their sex empire at the ages of 17 and 18. The name of the mail order company was Nameru National Medical Rubber Articles, which only had one item in the package: condoms. It took off like a rocket, and for 8 years they sent their flyers to newlyweds because, as the brothers already knew, iron must be forged when it is hot. They also continued selling at the market where the condoms flew off the shelves in individual sales. Fellow marketers were the first buyers - they bought for their own use or resold the condoms. Back then, many young men carried a condom in their pocket to demonstrate their experience and virility.
